Scottish Conservatives demand the SNP accelerate the upgrading and dualling of key roads

The SNP government must urgently accelerate the dualling of key roads across Scotland, the Scottish Conservatives will demand in Parliament this week.

Holyrood’s largest opposition party will use one of their party business slots at Holyrood on Wednesday to call on nationalist ministers to upgrade or dual trunk roads such as the A75, A77, A96 and to guarantee there will be no further delays in fully dualling the A9.

Scottish Conservative shadow transport secretary Sue Webber will call on SNP ministers to prioritise upgrading these key roads, to avoid more lives being tragically lost.

She will urge the SNP to adopt her party’s plans to pass an emergency law to fast-track the dualling of the A9 by the end of the next parliament, by expediting Environmental Impact Assessments and working with private companies.

Sue Webber added that these projects are also vital for growing Scotland’s economy and boosting opportunities in these areas, which have been abandoned by the SNP for too long.

Scottish Conservative shadow transport secretary Sue Webber MSP said: “The state of key roads across Scotland are a national disgrace and the SNP’s incompetence is continuing to cost lives.

“SNP ministers have sat on their hands while they have fallen into a state of total disrepair despite their repeated promises to dual roads such as A9 and A96.

“It is unacceptable that motorists are being treated with contempt by an SNP government that shamefully keeps kicking the can down the road.

“We are the only party at Holyrood that has proposed bold action to tackle this issue – with our plans to accelerate the dualling of roads like the A9 and A75 through private investment, which ministers cannot turn their nose up at.

“Connecting our cities and towns is vital for economic growth as well as saving lives by improving safety.

“Motorists and Scotland’s economy cannot wait a moment longer.

“SNP ministers urgently need to get their act together if we are to boost our economic growth and deliver the road upgrades that communities across Scotland are crying out for.”
